Add the Fizz Last

Mix all the non-carbonated ingredients first. The champagne, sparkling wine, seltzer water, club soda, ginger ale, or anything carbonated beverage should be added after the other ingredients are mixed and just before serving. Stir the punch in moderation to preserve the sparkle and fizz.

Use Sugar Syrup or "Simple Syrup"

Sugar, especially granulated, does not dissolve very well in cold liquids. It is better to use simple syrup, sometimes called sugar syrup. To make it: combine equal parts sugar and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil. Continue cooking for a minute or so until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is clear. Cool. Voila! Liquid sugar.

Chill All Ingredients Before Mixing

(Unless, of course, you are making a hot punch.) Do not rely on the ice to chill the punch after it is mixed. It makes an unpleasant effect. Chill the punch bowl, too. Put it in the refrigerator. Or if it doesn't fit, let some crushed ice sit in it before using.

Hot Punches Need a Heat Resistant Bowl

Cold punch recipes can be served in any bowl, but be careful with hot punch. Use a metal bowl, or at the very least, make sure your glass or china bowl is heat-resistant. As a precaution, preheat the bowl with hot water.

Don't Dilute

Small ice cubes melt quickly and water down the punch. To make a perfect, undiluted punch, try freezing some of the punch ahead in ice cubes or molds. Add it when you are ready to serve. Or you can partially freeze a portion of the punch in a Ziploc bag. Lay the bag flat in the freezer. Then create a slush to add to the punch. That way you get ice, but with flavor, and it won't dilute your punch. (Tip: This doesn’t work with alcoholic recipes.)

No Floating Fruit

Although it’s a common ingredient, it doesn't work well to float fruit in the punch. That makes it hard to ladle out the punch, since you have to try to avoid getting fruit in the ladle.

Save Your Money

When it comes to liquor in punch recipes, go with a less expensive brand. Fine wine and spirits should be savored and appreciated, not diluted with fruit juice and ice. If you feel like you just have to make a superior punch, buy the finest fruit juice and club soda money can buy.

How Much to Make

Punch goes a long way. Figure 10 people to a gallon. That's enough for your guests to drink about three 4-ounce servings during the party. Factor in the length of the party, the strength of the punch, the day of the week, how loud the party is and adjust accordingly.

Make your punch bowl set the centerpiece of the party. All eyes and taste buds will be drawn to it. Choose a punch bowl suitable for the occasion. It may be glass, metal, a classic beauty, obnoxiously cute or exquisite.

Use an Ice Mold

The best way to make your punch attractive and keep it cold at the same time is to make an ice mold or ring. This can be ice but frozen punch works better. Large blocks take longer to melt than cubes and they are easier to ladle the punch around.

Spruce Up Your Ice Mold

Add fruit, like whole strawberries, cranberries, grapes, mint leaves, citrus slices, cherries, etc., and your ice mold becomes very chic.

How to Add Fruit to the Ice Mold

Pour one half to one inch of liquid into the bottom of the mold, then add the fruit on top. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the freezer. If you are using water, use distilled water for the sake of clarity. When all is frozen, remove from the freezer and add more liquid to cover well. Freeze again. Allow several hours for the process. When complete, run warm water over the bottom of the mold to unset your design. Invert and float the mold in the.

Decorate with Flowers

Add flowers, instead of fruit, to your ice mold. Make sure to use edible flowers which have not been sprayed with chemicals. Wash them completely before adding them to the mold.

Improvise for a Mold

If you don't have a mold, small bowls, plastic storage containers, jell-o molds, and bundt pans all make excellent molds. A large muffin tin is perfect for floating citrus rounds. Float three to five of these medium sized molds instead of one large one. Keep some spares to float later when those melt. Searching your kitchen for creative ideas for ice molds is just as fun as making them.

Ice Cube Trays

These are the easier and most obvious type of mold. They come in all shapes and sizes. You’re bound to find one that fits your party's theme. Freeze whole, small strawberries, or other small fruit, in each compartment. This makes for an attractive punch, especially if you leave the hulls on. Float them in individual glasses, not the punch bowl, to prevent diluting the flavor of the punch.

Hot Punch

Float orange, lemon or lime slices, some cinnamon sticks, clove-studded citrus segments or a whole apple to add flavor.
